Fat Loves Art - Polly Dedman

Fat Loves Art Polly Dedman

Polly Dedman is a Melbourne based illustrator and animator. Her work is featured on t-shirts, magazines and in international projects like the London Mail-Me-Art or the Tokyo based 'Greetings from' collaboration.

Dedman has collaborated with not-for-profit organisation Project Respect to create an animation highlighting the human-traffiking industry in Australia.

Dedman is currently working on a new animation as part of the City of Melbourne Young Artists initiative, to be preseted in October 2009.

Fat Loves Art Tess McNamara
Tess McNamara studied Visual Art at Curtin University in Perth, leading her to develop a diverse art practise including included film, fashion, sculpture and painting. All of this alongside a hedonistic lifestyle including go-go dancing, superstar lesbian mud wrestling, drag king shows and being a member of the band Silkie Krusher and the Sex. With solo works and a residency at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, McNamara's work has come full circle, returning to pieces that concentrate on drawing and language.

Fat Loves Art Emily Valentine
Over the last 10 years,Emily Valentine has developed her own technique and style using feathers from roadkill, cat kill and dead pets to create her art pieces. In her own words - 'Feathers are my paint'.

Valentine created Mynah Collie 2007, a feathered dog (part of the dog flu series). Mynah Collie 2007 was awarded a merit prize in Norsewearart, the New Zealand Contemporary Art Award.

Nicholas Jones is a Melbourne based sculptor who uses books and printed paper to make works which question the manner in which books are 'read'. Jones' transformation of these books aim to highlight the poetic nature of the book as a form.

From Tuesday 1st September Each Fat store will present an in-house exhibition featuring four emerging artists: Nicholas Jones, Emily Valentine, Polly Dedman and Tess McNamara.

From Wednesday 2nd September: Head into any Fat store to collect a free mixed CD produced in Melbourne by Will Pyett.

On Thursday 3rd September Fat presents 'Survival of the Fittest', a free limited edition t-shirt exhibition featuring designs by designers PAM, Friedrich Gray, Reiss Radvanyi, Dress Up, Claude Maus, Carly Hunter, Alpha60, TV, Beat Poet, Birthday Suit, Therese Rawsthorne, and artists Dylan Martorell, FFixed, Tim Hillier, Andrew Liversidge, Len Berean and Rob Mcleish.

Rethreads

The Rethreads event is a clothes, music and book exchange, to be held at Carriageworks on Saturday 19th September 2009 (10am-5pm). Rethreads is presented by Carriageworks and the Clothing Exchange, in association with 2SER and Fbi.

Guys, girls and children can exchange up to 20 items of clothing, unlimited accessories, shoes, CD's, records and books in good condition. You can pre-drop your items Monday 14th September - Thursday 17th September (12.30pm-1.30pm) & Friday 18th September (9am-5pm) and enter to start swapping 45min before the doors open.

Garments will be screened at the door, and accepted items can be swapped one-for-one i.e. clothes for clothes, music for music etc.

Pigeon Ground and Newspaper Taxi are among the range of Sydney vintage stores with featured stalls.

Supporting the event is local music from 2SER, Fbi and a lineup of local live bands (live music includes sounds from Monsieur Camembert, Caitlin Park, The Slow Downs, One Mississippi and Robert McCrone), and you can also enjoy Carriagework's bar and cafe.

Holland draws inspiration from his hands-on experience as a tailor and the influences gained from growing up around his father (another notable tailor). His distinctive men's suits collections reflect his re-interpretation of conventional men's tailoring and details.

UTS: Fashioning Now

'Fashioning Now: Changing the Way We Make and Use Clothes' is an exhibition which seeks to 'highlight the diversity of sustainable solutions currently being explored by designers, researchers an manufacturers, while predicting possible scenarios for a future fashion industry'.

The Fashioning Now exhibition is divided into 4 categories: Source, Make, Use and Last - to follow the lifecycle of a piece of clothing, from its production to its end. The exhibition features: Romance was Born, Alison Gwilt, Perfect T-Shirt / Better Thinking Ltd, Alex Martin, Jennifer Shellard, Bijan Sheikhlary, Helen Storey, Timo Rissanen, Issey Miyake and The Local Wisdom project by Dr Kate Fletcher.

The Fashioning Now exhibition runs from Tuesday 28 July to Saturday 29th August 2009, opened on Tuesday evening 6-8pm by Dr Gene Sherman. The exhibition is part of the Sydney Design 09, presented by Powerhouse Museum.

The Portraits by Demola exhibition opened at Somedays Gallery on Wednesday 29th July 2009.

The exhibition is a collection of simple but striking portraits by British photographer Demola. Demola prefers to capture his subjects in natural light, taking inspiration from nature to direct the photos.

Halfsleeve & Jeans For Genes


Halfsleeve will donate AUD30 for each pair of Imperial Jeans they sell all this week until Friday 7th August (Jeans for Genes day). The money raised will be given to the Children's Medical Research Institute.

The jeans are a product of Australian brand Imperial Brand Clothing, in Queensland. Imperial pride themselves on designing and manufacturing high quality pieces. Their denim pieces are made with selected denim from Japan, Italy and the USA.

graniph announced the winners of their 2009 on Saturday 1st August 2009. graniph selected 1 Gold Prize winner, 5 Silver winners, 10 Bronze place designs, and 7 Magazine-Choice awards. The Gold Prize winner(pictured) Choi Hwang Ho who won 1,000,000Yen.
