National Gallery Victoria(NGV) has announced Simone LeAmon as the recipient of the 2009 Cicely & Colin Rigg Contemporary Design Award.

The prize of AUD$30,000 was awarded to LeAmon for her chair, titled Lepidoptera(pictured).

The 2009 competition comprised the work of 14 furniture designers of contemporary seat furniture. The designs were judged by Dr Kees Dorst, Professor of Design at the faculty of Design, Architecture and Building of the University of Technology, Sydney and senior researcher at the department of Industrial Design of Eindoven University of Technology, The Netherlands.

The award is a generous legacy of the late Colin Rigg (1895-1982), a former secretary of the Felton Bequests' Committee for the NGV. The award focusses on contemporary seat furniture design.

The 2009 Cicely & Colin Rigg Contemporary Design Award is on display at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia from Thursday 12 March to Sunday 30 August 2009. Admission to the exhibition is free.

Billabong Design For Humanity Sydney 2009


Billabong charity event ‘Design for Humanity’ was held in Sydney last month, a fashion show new season looks featuring US model and Sports Illustrated cover girl 2007 and 2008, Tori Praver and top Australian models like Annika Kaban.

Billabong’s catwalk show included themes like ‘Since 73′, a tribute to Billabong’s Australian surf history; ‘Pretty Tough’, a story of black, leather & glitz; ‘Rhapsody’, exhibiting deluxe boho style; and ‘Superheroes’. One-off bikinis & clothing pieces were shown alongside garments which will be available to the public next Summer.

“Hidden Gems” by Amelia Soegijono and Markus Van Dri

On Wednesday 4th March 2009, Somedays Gallery opened the fashion photography show “Hidden Gems” by Amelia Soegijono and Markus Van Driel.

In their first photographic exhibition, Soegijono and Van Driel each present an individual series of photographs. Van Driel's imagery is reminiscent of the 50's Woman, with a contemporary edge. Soegijono's series "is concerned with the four elements and an exploration of movement, nature and narrative".

The show continues until March 30.

Eleni Kondos and Roderick Ng are designers and co-founders of fashion labelMaster/slave, starting the label after meeting at a costume(theatre, film and millinery) course at Sydney Institute of Technology in 2004.

Master/slave draws on a widerange of design experience to create their garments and shoes. Their experience includes designer made-to-measure tailoring, theatre, photography, makeup artistry and styling.

Master/slave has gone from strength to strength, designing for celebrity and corporate clients, featuring in print, music videos and on television shows such as Australia's Next Top Model and So You Think You Can Dance.

David Jones officially launched its 2009 Autumn/Winter Season on the morning of Wednesday 11th February, at the Hordern Pavillion, Moore Park, Sydney.
The Autumn/Winter season was Miranda Kerr's first as David Jones Fashion Ambassador. Autumn Winter 09 collections showcased at the Hordern Pavillion included: Akira, Alannah Hill, Anna Thomas, Calibre, Collette Dinnigan, Ginger and Smart, Gorman, Thurley and Zimmerman. Lisa Ho created the opening and Sass&Bide completed the finale.

The MLC Centre will launch its 3rd fashion photography exhibition on Tuesday 24th March, 2009. Titled "From Barely There to Wondrous" (with florals and tulle in between), the exhibition features works by 21 Australian photographers including Derek Henderson, Georges Antoni, Richard Bailey, Carlotta Moye and Simon Lekias.

The public can view the exhibition during business hours on the fashion level of the MLC Centre, from Wednesday 25th March to Wednesday 8th April 2009. Limited edition prints are on sale for AUD$750.00. Profits will benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
