Remaking Fashion

The "Remaking Fashion" exhibition at the National Gallery Victoria(NGV) in Melbourne examines an emerging aesthetic "where elements of clothing construction have become components of design". Hidden elements such as fasteners or foundation materials, or processes such as basting or raw hems have become part of the aesthetic appeal of the garment.

The collection draws on the NGV's collection of Pierre Cardin toiles, used in the 1960's to make Pierre Cardin dresses for the Australian market.

The exhibition also features contemporary examples of the aesthetic by designers such as Rei Kawakubo (Comme de Garçons), Maison Martin Margiela, Helmut Lang and John Galliano.

Remaking Fashion is located at Level 2 Myer Fashion and Textiles Gallery, NGV International at 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne from Friday 26th September 2008 to Sunday 19 April 2009.
